Greg Corbett – Franchisee, Francesco Group Shrewsbury
My Journey into hairdressing began back in 1998, where I started my Hairdressing Education at Walsall College, who were working in partnership with Francesco Group. From day one on the course, I just knew it was the best choice I had ever made. The experience I gained from this course gave me a strong desire that really set me up for the future. I still use the skills, experience and knowledge learnt at the very beginning of my hairdressing journey.
Roll on the year 2000 and I was introduced to the Founder of Francesco Group, Frank Dellicompagni. He handpicked me to work at the Francesco Group Wolverhampton salon, this was a pivotal point in my career. Working in the salon environment at the college was a great starting point for me and set me up for working in a real salon. I qualified as a Stylist and earned a distinction on Francesco Group’s Finishing School, the highest possible grade, and then went on to win Stylist of the Year at the Francesco Group in-house awards for three consecutive years! – What a whirlwind!
Fast forward to 2009 and I joined the Francesco Group salon in Newport, I was able to learn the management side of running a salon here and shadowed the Franchisee. It was at this point that I enrolled on the FG management programme which made the person I am today – I even won Delegate of the Year!
In 2010 I took over the franchisee at Francesco Group Knowle, I’d learnt a lot from all of my experience with Francesco Group has set me up for this new challenge and the had endless opportunities for me to grow as a manager and build my team. After Knowle I moved on the Francesco Group salon in Birmingham and I am now the proud owner of Francesco Group Shrewsbury.
My entire journey with Francesco Group has been one of fantastic learning and all of the very early lessons I learnt whist studying at Walsall College have enabled me to have great success in my career now.
Emily Harding – Current Level 3 Student with Stafford College
I’ve always wanted to be a hairdresser and it felt like the natural route for me to take after leaving high school, when I found out I’d been offered a place on Stafford College’s Hairdressing Course in conjunction with Francesco Group, I was thrilled!
I’ve really enjoyed the course so far and can’t wait to get my teeth into Level 3! On my level 2 course, I’ve really loved how the course is structured and the busy atmosphere of the salon, the experienced has made me believe I’ll be able to work well in a salon when I’ve competed my studies. The Course has been really well balanced with equal sessions of workshops, theory and hands on work in the academy salon.
The educators have been brilliant; they’re very knowledgeable and easy to approach if I’ve struggled with anything. On my level 3 course, I’m excited to start working more creatively. Learning the classics on my last course has really given me a great foundation to start building my skills on.
In the future I plan to start working in a salon and build my confidence up and then open my own salon. I also have aspirations to enter industry competitions and I hope that the high standard of my education will be a fantastic building block for this!
In the early 1960’s I left school and embarked into my hairdressing education at the local Mining and Technical College, I remember feeling so excited to gather hands on experience through practical sessions and experimentation, unfortunately I remember learning outdated techniques and endless hours of theory. I completed my course out of respect for my parents but all I learned here was how not to inspire youngsters, I knew that if I ever had the opportunity to make a difference to training I would!
Fast forward to 1998, I had now built Francesco Group up to 25 salons across the heart of England and had a respected and thriving Apprenticeship programme. I was asked to help develop Walsall College’s Hairdressing Course. This was it; this was my chance to change education, to make it everything it wasn’t for me!
We turned college education and theory on its head! It’s really important to have the theory of how to do a haircut or to dress hair but to learn using your hands in a real life salon situation is simply the best! We created a functioning salon inside the College offering discounted services, we trained all staff members to Francesco Group standards and implemented targets for learners to achieve.
Almost 20 years on we still work with Walsall College and have expanded the College Partnership programme to 13 colleges. It’s such an achievement to think so many students are getting a great experience and will go on to be fantastic hairdressers.
The Spotlight Awards is an annual competition that brings our college network together and highlights the great talent we have within. The competition is open to any student studying Hairdressing at any one of our College Partnerships and Students are encouraged to enter as part of their learning.
