Niclola Welsh Nicola Welch  -  Level 2 Full Time Student

Francesco Group Stafford Academy.

Nicola Welch is a Mature Full Time Stafford College Student at Francesco Group’s Old Printowrks Aacdemy, Stafford and will complete her NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing in June.

"I worked as an Administrator at Francesco Group Head Office for 20 years and I always regretted not taking the hairdressing route. The opportunity arose last Summer and I haven’t looked back – I should have done it years ago!

I love working with people, I’m a complete chatterbox! So hairdressing is the perfect career choice for me; you get to interact with people from all walks of life.

The training has definitely been harder than I thought, the theory side can be really challenging, but it is a million times better for me personally. Every day is different and that keeps it interesting. Being 20 years older than most of the other students I was a little nervous to start with, but everyone has been so welcoming and we work really well together. The tutors are fab too, really approachable.

I'm loving every aspect of my training; we’ve covered the basics like shampooing and blow drying and now we’re starting to learn more about cutting and colouring. I just want to have a go at everything and keep learning new skills. I’ll do my NVQ Level 3 next and then so long as I’m running a column I’ll be happy!"

Charlotte Smith Melissa Mellor  -  Level 3 Full Time Student

Francesco Group Stafford Academy.

Melissa Mellor a Level 3 student from Stafford Academy, with Stafford College, has been celebrating after winning Wella Professionals’ Xposure Competition! Xposure is an annual competition open to college students across the country and provides a platform for emerging talent to showcase their creative flair and the chance to win a host of money-can’t-buy prizes!

Why did you choose to train with Francesco Group?
I heard the Group had a good reputation and I wanted to give myself a great start to my hairdressing training and I wanted access to the best opportunities. I have loved coming to the Academy for the last 3 years. A lot has happened in that time; I’ve had a baby and through the support of my tutors I’ve still managed to return and complete my qualification!

What are your hopes for the future?
I would really like to stay with Francesco Group and raise my profile within the Company and then who knows where that might lead?!

Talk us through your winning look...
For my initial look I wanted to create an on-trend look using warm copper tones but using the colouring technique ‘Balayage’; blending darker tones at the roots, through to lighter tones at the ends. I wanted to use this effect on short hair to make my look stand out, as it is more unusual and not seen very often.

What was the Final like?
On the day I felt really nervous and even forgot my mood board!! But the judges and staff at the London Wella Studio were really reassuring and made me feel at ease, so I started to relax and enjoy it. It was an amazing experience and I hadn’t expected to get through to the final, let alone win! It just shows that if you put your mind to it you can achieve anything!
