Ben Talks Business with
the Best in the Industry

Francesco Group Latest News

Ben Dellicomapgni Talking Business

Managing Director, Ben Dellicompagni was invited to be a guest panelist at The Fellowship of British Hairdressing’s Business Brunch. The event proved a resounding success and Ben joined a panel of high-profile salon owners, all answering a series of pertinent questions relating to the hairdressing industry.

The event, hosted at the L’Oreal Academy by Fellowship for British Hairdressing member and business expert Simon Shaw, attracted salon owners from across the UK – not surprising with a panel which included Stelios Andrew, co-director of Rush Hair; Amanda Dicker, co-founder of the Chapel salon group; Victor Pajak, owner of Headquarters, Kingston-upon-Thames; Ben Dellicompagni, managing director of the Francesco Group; and Hellen Ward, director of the Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa, London.

Each panellist offered their own unique take on a series of issues, including staffing, discounting, and the benefits of a celebrity clientele or associations.

On staffing issues, Victor stressed the need to have clear written rules and regulations in place so that staff members know exactly where they stand. Stelios commented on how much easier it was in the age of social media for staff who leave to take clients with them. Ben said that at Francesco Group they endeavoured to create a culture that engaged the stylists and encouraged loyalty. Ben also stressed the importance of quality training and there needs to be a rise the minimum entry level for trainees and that the current NVQ Level 2 is too low.

Minimum Wage:
Protecting Your Staff

Francesco Group Latest News

Francesaco Group in Hairdressers Journal

The subject of National Minimum Wage has been a hot topic of conversation recently with it coming to light that a considerable amount of employers don’t comply with these standard regulations.

In direct contrast, Ben Dellicompagni, MD of Francesco Group, has been cited by The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) as a champion employer for recognising a need to protect low paid workers by compiling with the National Minimum Wage regulations.

Ben says, "If you run a business, there is a lot to get your head around. Payroll in particular can be confusing. Despite that, ensuring that your employees are being paid correctly should be at the top of your priority list. Everyone deserves the National Minimum Wage as a minimum and if you aren’t paying it you are breaking the law. BIS enforces this law and if caught, you will face fines and public naming, which can hit your bottom line hard and even sink a small business. At Francesco Group, we ensure our policies are watertight and strongly recommend you do the same. Without treating our staff properly and showing them respect, we wouldn’t be where we are today."

This release has featured in Salon Business, Hairdressers Journal and Professional Hairdresser and will follow on in Pro Hair & Beauty and Salon Magazine.

This year’s Style Birmingham Live AW13 host, Emma Willis, said: “I can’t wait to get back to Birmingham to host the show this year. The plans for the catwalk show at Town Hall are incredible and with so many stores and brands already lined up to take part, the show is set to be the best Style Birmingham yet. I love to go shopping in Birmingham when I’m back in the Midlands, so after a day of no-stop fashion and beauty, I’m looking forward to hitting the shops.”

Commenting on the continued success of Style Birmingham Live, Jonathan Cheetham, Chair of Retail Birmingham, said: “Style Birmingham Live is Retail Birmingham’s flagship event and has become a firm favourite in the region’s diary since its inception six years ago. We’re very much looking forward to the return of the show in September this year, with a change of venue and exciting new hosts. With over 1,000 stores in the city centre, 100’s of which are independent, the show gives us the perfect platform to showcase our retailers and to combine our efforts to encourage shoppers into Birmingham to experience for themselves both the show and the wider fantastic retail offer we are so proud of.”

Walsall College Graded Outstanding

Francesco Group is delighted to announce that it’s hairdressing-training partner, Walsall College has received a Grade 1, Outstanding for the Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy provision from their Ofsted Inspection.

Francesco Group is passionate about education and is committed to providing students with exceptional, vocational hairdressing training. Francesco Group’s College Partnerships were devised to intertwine Francesco Group’s commercial experience and hairdressing technical ability with the educational expertise of college tutors; to provide students with an inspirational and motivating atmosphere to help lead them through their hairdressing career.

The partnership programme has given colleges the opportunity to develop on-site, state-of-the-art hairdressing salons that mirror Francesco Group salons. These salons provide a real commercial environment to equip students with real life skills and the experience of a true working environment; with structured opening hours, customer service and financial targets to work towards. The partnership is passionate about giving young people, from all backgrounds, the chance to reach their potential, providing them with 'real training for the real world'.

Below are some of the excellent comments from the Ofsted Inspection Report:

"Excellent teaching, learning and assessment enable students and apprentices to achieve exceptionally well. Success rates are very high on most courses and students develop excellent practical skills. Attendance rates are high and many students progress to higher level courses or into employment on completion of their programme of study."

"Teaching in practical sessions is outstanding and enables students to make rapid progress. Students demonstrate outstanding salon etiquette and many work at a level beyond that required of the course."

"Practical lessons are expertly designed and taught so as to enable students to develop outstanding vocational skills. Students make rapid progress and quickly learn how to complete complex tasks such as advanced foiling, nail extensions and electrical body treatments. Students experience the pressures of a commercial environment and teachers develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the retail and commercial opportunities that exist."

"Resources to support learning are outstanding and the commercial hairdressing and beauty salons reflect the very best of industry standards and practices. Students make extensive use of a well-populated and interactive VLE to augment their learning within lessons and outside the classroom. Teachers use a wide range of teaching methods that motivate and engage students in interesting and memorable learning activities."
