Planet

ONE SALON AT A TIME!

ONE SALON AT A TIME!

As the climate crisis becomes ever more prominent in all of our minds, each Earth Day that comes along takes on extra significance. Earth Day was established in 1970 and encourages countries across the World to celebrate and support the environment, highlighting the urgent action we need to take to save our precious planet.

Here at Francesco Group, we want to take further steps as a collective, to positively impact the environment and reduce our contributions to climate change. We are at the start of an exciting journey to bring positive changes into our Salons!

Currently, all Francesco Group salons use EasyDry Towels. EasyDry is a super absorbent fabric created using the latest technological innovations in textile design. They are luxurious disposable towels that are 100% recyclable, biodegradable and offer the highest level of hygiene. They are made using eco-friendly processes and without any chemicals, providing our salons with a sustainable, convenient alternative to cotton towels, which also help our salons save water too! Did you know that laundering 1 cotton towel wastes 5 litres of clean water?!

The great thing about Easydry is that they are so much more hygienic than cotton towels. We use them once, but there’s no wastage as they are immediately put into the recycling bin. Our clients are loving them.

THE FUTURE OF SALON

THE FUTURE OF SALON
Sustainability

FGChristchurch, our flagship salon for the future of sustainability within Francesco Group, are currently working with a company called Salon Sustainability and have been a part of their scheme since April 2021…

Salon Sustainability helps us to recycle up to 95% of our salon waste from foils, chemicals and hair to paper and plastics. These waste products are collected from us and sent to a recycling/sorting location where they either recycle or dispose of waste in the best way possible.

Here’s a brief breakdown into where and what happens to the waste once it leaves the salon:

Hair
Hair is made into ‘hair booms’ to be used for chemical spills across the world. The hair can also be made into compost to help grow food.

Plastics
Plastics get turned into pellets and sold back to the plastics industry to manufacture new plastic products.

Chemicals
Chemicals go through a process to remove the water to recycle back into the water system then the remaining chemicals are disposed of safely.

Metals & Foils
Metals get sorted by type (aluminium, steel), cleaned and reprocessed into aluminium ingots and sold on to make foil, cans, confectionery wrapping paper etc.

Paper
All our cardboard and papers get processed and ink gets removed from the paper and is sold on as recycled pulp to make cardboard boxes, paper etc.

I decided to take the leap to join Salon Sustainability as I want to actively lower the effects my salon has on the environment. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for many years in the salon and I’m very grateful that we are now able to do it. My team is very passionate about keeping our salon environmentally friendly, lowering our carbon footprint and protecting the world around us.

As well as actively working with the salon sustainability scheme, FGChristchurch also uses reusable gloves to help cut down on single use plastics, in addition to the Easydry towels, which are 100% biodegradable. The local council supplies the salon with a larger recycling bin for items too big for Salon Sustainability to take away, so that everything is being disposed of effectively.

We love to post about our sustainability on our social media accounts and to keep clients who visit the salon up to date on our latest efforts to protect our planet. We get incredible feedback from clients, they definitely appreciate the work we are doing and it inspires them to take action and perhaps take similar small steps to positively impact our environment.

All of FGChristchurch’s small but effective changes ultimately reduce their carbon footprint and play a bigger role in protecting our planet one salon at a time!

Kerastase Refills

REUSE, REFILL
Repeat

Alongside our salons being more sustainable, we also want to ensure the brands we work with hold similar wishes of reducing carbon footprints and protecting the environment. In recent years, Kérastase has been introducing ‘waste-conscious’ practices into the production of their products and have ambitious plans to ensure all their packaging is environmentally friendly by 2025…

By 2025, we are committed to ensuring that 100% of all of our plastic packaging will be refillable, reusable, or recyclable; By 2030, 100% of the plastics used in all our packaging will be either from recycled or bio-based sources which is renewable.

Kerastase

At selected Francesco Group salons, the new Kérastase Refillable Shampoo bottles are now available to purchase alongside the Refill Pouches, available in a selection of the different Kérastase ranges such as Genesis, Nutritive and Blond Absolu.

Kerastase Refills

Kérastase applies its innovative spirit to an entirely new shampoo delivery system that is more luxurious and sustainable than ever before. Available in five Kérastase ranges, the refillable Bain provides a reusable, beautiful shampoo bottle for an aesthetically pleasing, luxury look in the shower.

The Refill pouches use 82% less plastic packaging and hold twice as much product as regular one time use bottles! The aluminium bottles also come with a 100% organic cotton bag to keep your bottle and refill pouch in.

To show your support this Earth Day, why not reflect on what you can do as an individual to reduce your carbon footprint… whether that’s recycling more plastic in your house, or treating yourself to new sustainable Kérastase products!
