FG Love Stories!

FG Love Stories!

Hearts Divide

When we talk about the #FGFamily, we really do mean it! Many of our salons are run by successful partners who share a life together as well as a business.

We spoke to a handful of our Francesco Group couples to find out if love really is in the ‘hair’!

Hearts Divide
Mia and Yogi - Francesco Group Love Stories

Mia & Yogi

Mia & Yogi are on our board of directors; daughter of Francesco Dellicompagni, Mia is used to intertwining business and family! When Yogi joined the business, it was the perfect fit.

What came first: business or love?

Yogi  –  Business came first believe it or not, I was working as a consultant for a software company and was asked to represent them at Francesco Group Awards in 2004 as they were a sponsor and FG were clients. I remember meeting Mia through some friends whilst having a drink at the bar! It was a fantastic awards night and the next day I had the opportunity to contact Mia directly and love certainly followed. When I went to meet her on a date and saw her again, it was “WOW”, my first reaction was that Mia was absolutely beautiful and stunning! 15 years later and Mia is still as beautiful and an incredible person, I am such a lucky guy!

What’s your best advice for balancing your work and relationship?

Mia  –  I’m still trying to work that one out! Yogi is better than me and switches off readily. Patience and strong communication are key.

Yogi  –  This is really tough, as not only do we live together, we work together and share an office! Sometimes it is difficult to completely switch off as we are both engrossed in what we do and are passionate about the business. We live in a great part of the country, so on occasion we remove ourselves from the office and take a walk along the beach and just chat. It’s often where our best ideas come. We have started 2019 by walking to work, which is really a great way to start the day and it makes our days much more productive.

What are the main advantages to working with your partner?

Yogi  –  We are on the same page, we trust each other; we do have disagreements, however we share the same vision, so we are able to sort out our differences eventually!

Mia  –  We both have full understanding on each other’s pressures and recognise when we need to pick each other up, it’s also great we can enjoy each other’s achievements and help to motivate each other… we both get IT!

What’s the most challenging thing about working with your partner?

Yogi  –  Definitely forgetting to switch off sometimes and enjoying our family, we are very blessed to have two wonderful children Rocco and Latika.

Mia  –  It’s hard when one of us can’t switch off from work, but we make sure we frequently have family time!

What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?

Yogi  –  There is nothing better that cooking a lovely meal at home and chatting over a glass of wine, as I have the best company and don’t need a fancy restaurant! Mia would probably disagree!

Mia  –  I’m hoping it’s better than last year’s Tesco Finest range! We will be sharing it with our two beautiful children.

Hearts Divide
Jon and Paul Main - FG Newport Salon Franchise

Jon & Paula

Jon opened Francesco Group Newport in 2002, Paula came to interview for a position in the salon and three years later they were married.

What came first: business or love?

Paula  –  Jon and I met when he interviewed me, and the rest is history! We hadn’t met before, but I was a loyal client at Francesco Group, Bridle Road.

What’s your best advice for balancing your work and relationship?

Jon  –  I have to say that working and living together can be hard, but we try and not bring work home with us!

Paula  –  It’s easier said than done, but I know but we try and make a conscious effort!

What are the main advantages to working with your partner?

Jon  –  It’s great working together as we offer different qualities to the salon, clients and staff.

Paula  –  Working together gives us the drive to be the best that we can be! We are also our staff’s work Mum and Dad, which I think is a nice, secure feeling for the team, we feel like a family.

What’s the most challenging thing about working with your partner?

Paula  –  When we irritate each other, we have to keep it away from clients and staff and remain professional!

What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?

Paula  –  We have no plans for Valentine’s Day as we’re working and it’s our late-night opening at the salon. Romance, eh?! But I’m sure we’ll get each other a card like we always do!

Hearts Divide
Kerry and Judy - FG Love Stories

Judy & Kerry

Kerry and Judy have been involved with FG since 1981, becoming Franchisees in 1984, with the ownership of Francesco Group Church Lane.

What came first: business or love?

Judy  –  Kerry and I met 40 years ago this year! We were both working for Steiners on board the Canberra – Kerry as a Stylist and me as Beauty Therapist. He joined FG in April 1981 and we got married in the July. We bought the salon in August 1984 and have always been in partnership with the business, but I didn’t join the team as Front of House until 2001.

What’s your best advice for balancing your work and relationship?

Judy  –  Lots of people thought we wouldn’t be able to work together, but it has never been a problem – mainly because Kerry was quite happy to say to the staff “Judy is the boss”! They all know that we discuss everything – they’ve never been able to play one of us against the other!

What are the main advantages to working with your partner?

Kerry  –  : I think we have done this for so long now that we couldn’t imagine anything else! It also works because we are not in each other’s way – we both do different jobs and as we have gotten older, we do less hours so we’re not together every day!

What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?

Judy  –  We have no plans for Valentine’s Day as the weekend after we are going to Tom Kerridge’s Restaurant – The Hand and Flowers in Marlowe. We can’t wait!

Hearts Divide
Paul and Saranne - FG Love Stories

Paul & Saranne

Both Paul and Saranne began their careers at Francesco Group Streetly and in 2012 they took ownership of the salon.

What came first: business or love?

Paul  –  We first met when I was a client at the Streetly salon and Saranne was an apprentice, but our relationship didn’t start until years later when we were at a hair show in Paris!

What are the main advantages to working with your partner?

Paul  –  I get to spend nearly every day with my best friend.

Saranne  –  I get to see his handsome face all the time!

What’s the most challenging thing about working with your partner?

Paul  –  Learning to switch off. There is always work to do, so you can both end up burning the candle at both ends.

Saranne  –  Trying not to bring work home with you. In our job the business side of things is hard to fit in to your day, so we can end up staying up working until late.

What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?

Saranne  –  Chinese takeaway and Netflix. Same as every year!

Hearts Divide

Rich & Kate

Rich and Kate have worked together at Francesco Group’s Head Office for the past 8 years, Kate as PA to our Director of Hairdressing, Anya Dellicompagni and Rich as Head of Design in the Marketing team.

What came first: business or love?

Rich  –  Love! We met at Primary School, age 5, but didn’t get together until we were at high school.

Kate  –  Love! We were childhood sweethearts. Rich and I have grown up together – we lived on the same housing estate and attended the same Primary School, High School and College. It all started with a short romance at 15.

What’s your best advice for balancing your work and relationship?

Rich  –  We work in the same office but have vastly different roles. We don’t take too much work home, we leave it at the office with any other challenges overcome during the day.

Kate  –  We sometimes talk about work too much but try and leave ‘work’ at work.

What are the main advantages to working with your partner?

Rich  –  If it’s raining, rather than cycling to work, I can start a bit later and get a lift!

Kate  –  We get to car share and he buys me lunch if I’ve forgotten mine! As we both work in the same building, we understand the pressures at Head Office and are able to support each other. We both take pride in our work and are quite particular in what we do. We have this ‘internal’ challenge to try and spot mistakes in each other’s work!

What’s the most challenging thing about working with your partner?

Rich  –  Nothing really. As long as you can leave home life at home.

Kate  –  We are both quite outspoken, so it is sometimes challenging when our opinions clash.

What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?

Kate  –  I will leave it in the capable hands of Rich to organise something super romantic! (Probably catching up on Coronation Street with a chippy tea!)

Rich  –  A nice meal out somewhere followed by a movie at the new Stafford Odeon.

Hearts Divide
Matt and Jill Carey - FG Love Stories

Matt & Jill

Matt has been with Francesco Group for 21 years, taking ownership of Francesco Group Nantwich 19 years ago. His wife Jill joined him as a salon partner in 2017.

What came first: business or love?

Jill  –  Matt and I met in a pub, I was on a night out with Jacky from Francesco Group, Hanley and she introduced us. I can’t say it was love at first sight, I had enjoyed too much red wine that night and couldn’t remember exchanging numbers!

What’s your best advice for balancing your work and relationship?

Matt  –  Don’t get too upset about the small stuff, in some ways it’s a blessing to work together and we both feel fortunate for the flexibility it gives us in terms of planning family holidays and childcare arrangements.

What are the main advantages to working with your partner?

Jill  –  We are both looking towards the same goals and we are able to communicate the business needs on a regular basis, we both have the same end in mind and we know exactly what we need to do to achieve it!

What’s the most challenging thing about working with your partner?

Matt  –  The challenges are not taking work home, it’s a tough one when it’s your own business and I would like to say we shut off at home…but it’s often not the case!

What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?

Jill  –  Matt may cook me a meal which would be a rare occasion! He is however a romantic and always gets me flowers and chocolates, what more could a girl ask for?!

Hearts Divide

Anthony & Zoe

Anthony and Zoe have owned Francesco Group Westbourne for 13 years, the salon where they originally met.

What came first: business or love?

Anthony  –  Business! We both worked in the Westbourne salon as stylists. We then left to go travelling around the world for 15 months.

Zoe  –  When we came back Anthony worked in the Bournemouth salon and I went back to work in the Westbourne salon. After 7 years the then Franchisee, Jacky approached us to buy it off her as she wanted to retire. We have now been Franchising it for 13 years.

What’s your best advice for balancing your work and relationship?

Anthony  –  Have great friends and family around you, have your own outside interests & hobbies and know when to stop talking shop!

What are the main advantages to working with your partner?

Anthony  –  Seeing so much of them!

Zoe  –  Working and being in business with someone you completely trust and knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

What’s the most challenging thing about working with your partner?

Anthony  –  Talking shop 24/7 and taking work home with you every night.

What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?

Zoe  –  Working, plus a bottle of fizz accompanied with seafood.
