Mental Health Stigma

In The Workplace

Francesco Group team members recently completed training with Respond Training to become certified First Aiders for Mental Health – supporting colleagues, Apprentices or clients who may be experiencing mental health difficulties.

The responsibilities of a First Aider for Mental Health are to be the main point of contact for anyone who is going through some form of mental health difficulty. They are there to help identify early symptoms of ill mental health, to start supportive conversations, provide a safe and non-judgemental space to speak freely and provide reassurance & assess the risk of self-harm or suicide. Mental Health First Aiders will then signpost and encourage the appropriate professional support.

We are really proud of our work with Respond Training; as hairdressers and employers we interact with so many people on a day-to-day basis and it is important that we nurture an environment where people are comfortable talking about their mental health

By doing this course Francesco Group are hoping to tackle mental health stigma in the workplace, improve and promote good mental health in the workplace and give immediate comfort and support to those that need it.

I’m so pleased that the Francesco Group could see the value of this type of training and is investing in its staff in this way. I really believe that there is a great synergy between support for mental health and the hairdressing industry. It’s a well-acknowledged fact that clients will often talk to their hairdressers about their personal lives, sometimes perhaps in a way that they wouldn’t to those closer to them, and equipping staff in salons with the skills to recognise when someone might be experiencing mental health difficulties, listen without judgement and then sign-post to further help, where appropriate, seems to make perfect sense.

The course gets people thinking and talking about self-care, supporting colleagues and developing a culture of wellbeing in the workplace
