Know Your Curls!

Are you frustrated that the products you’ve purchased for your curly hair aren’t having the desired effect?  If you get to know your curls you can learn the correct styling techniques and products that will work for you, let us help you to create curls you can be proud of!

First up, we need you to learn your curls! When you have identified the type of curl you have, it will be easier to help you find styling techniques and products that work.

2A

Loose curls with a gentle bend, easy to manage, has a natural sheen. We advise using mousses, lotions & gels that enhance the curls but don’t weigh them down.

Products:

Wella System Professional Hydrate Shampoo & Conditioner

Wella Eimi Boost Bounce

Wella Eimi Root Shoot

2B – Mostly straight at the roots with medium waves, has a natural sheen, little resilient to styling, has a tendency to frizz. We recommend using mousses and gels that enhance the curls but don’t weigh them down. Also, use a diffuser to enhance wave pattern.

Products:

Wella System Professional Smoothen Shampoo & Conditioner

Wella System Professional Smoothen Curl Definer

Sebastian Professional Texturizer

Sebastian Professional Potion 9

Wella Eimi 48hour Shape Me

2C –Tight waves, more resilient to styling, hair frizzes easily. To help style hair and manage frizz, use a lot of gel and scrunch in styling products with a microfiber towel.

Products:

  • Wella System Professional Smoothen Curl Definer
  • Sebastian Professional Texturizer
  • Sebastian Professional Taming Elixir
  • Wella Eimi Flowing Form
  • Wella Eimi Perfect Me

Biggest issues: Fighting frizz & finding light products that give hold.

3A – Loose curls that are similar in size to a chunky chalk, curls are well defined and often shiny, easily straightened. If you are concerned with reducing fizz and adding definition we recommend using creams and gels that offer light moisture and curl definition, we also advise avoiding shampoos drying ingredients (like sulphates).

Products:

  • Wella System Professional Smoothen Shampoo Shampoo & Conditioner
  • Wella System Proffessional Smoothen Curl Definer
  • Sebastian Professional Taming Elixir
  • Wella Eimi Boost Bounce
  • KeraCare Silken Seal

3B – Medium curls that have the circumference of a sharpie, not particularly shiny, coarse in texture & effected by climate frizz. Gels & creams work best on this type of hair, but because this type tends to frizz easily, use products with extra moisture and serious frizz control to keep your hair in check!

Products:

  • KeraCare Natural Texture Cleansing Cream
  • KeraCare Natural Texture Leave in Conditioner
  • KeraCare Natural Texture Defining Custard

3C – Tight curls that have the circumference of a pencil or a straw, hair looks more voluminous. We recommend using butters, creams & oils on this type of hair because it can be very fragile.

Products:

  • KeraCare Natural Texture Leave in Conditioner
  • KeraCare Silken Seal Liquid Sheen/Serum
  • KeraCare Natural Textures Cleansing Cream
  • KeraCare Natural Textures Defining Custard

Biggest issues: Curl definition, fighting frizz & avoiding drying ingredients

4A – Loose curls that have the circumference of a crochet needle; can be fine in texture, less natural protection from damage. We recommend keeping butters, creams & oils on hand for this type of hair, they will be a styling lifesaver!

Products:

  • KeraCare Natural Textures Leave in Conditioner
  • KeraCare Natural Textures Twist & Define Cream
  • KeraCare Natural Texture Daily Hair Milk
  • KeraCare Natural Textures Cleansing Cream

4B – Medium Z pattern coils – less of a defined curl, the hair bends in sharp angles, coarse/fine texture, very fragile, hair suffers from shrinkage. We advise detangling your hair with a lot of conditioner in your hair and using a comb or detangling brush. We also recommend cleansing your scalp anywhere between every two days to every two weeks.

Products:

  • KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo
  • KeraCare Humecto Cream Conditioner
  • KeraCare Strengthening Thermal Protector
  • KeraCare Silken Seal Liquid Sheen
  • KeraCare Natural Textures Butter Cream

4C – Similar size and shape to type 4B coils, with greater shrinkage and density, can be challenging to work with, usually looks dense & matt, driest of all hair types and very delicate, can shrink up to 75% of normal length. Use styling creams, butters & oils on this type of hair, we also advise frequently deep conditioning the hair to add extra moisture & strength.

Products:

  • KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo
  • KeraCare Humecto Cream Conditioner
  • KeraCare Silken Seal Liquid Sheen
  • KeraCare Natural Textures Butter Cream

Biggest Issues: Maintaining moisture, avoiding tangles & shrinkage

The best time to identify your curl pattern is when you hair when it is wet. If you have been straightening your hair for the past few years or even months you may have heat damage. If you roots are curlier than the ends of your hair this is a good indication of damage and figuring out your curl pattern may be a struggle, if this is the case going for the big chop or maintaining what you have but treating sections of the hair differently depending on the types of damage to the hair would be advisable. We recommend avoiding any heat tools including blow-dryers, flat irons and curling wands until you have identified your curls.

We hope these tips help you to embrace your curls, speak to your hair stylist for more information on hair care & products.
