Skin Allergy Tests: What You Need to Know?

At Francesco Group, the health and well-being of our clients is our priority, which is why our Skin Allergy Tests Policy insists that all new colour clients undergo a Skin Patch Test, at least 48 hours before their technical appointment.

We know that you lead busy lives and that two trips to the salon within a week can seem a hassle. That is why we want to take the time to explain the importance of Skin Allergy Testing.

Why We Carry Out Skin Allergy Tests

To make sure we give you the highest levels of customer care, we insist on Skin Allergy Tests to ensure your comfort and protection.

Skin Allergy Tests help prevent allergic reactions to colour application occurring. We follow, exactly, the guidelines from Wella Professionals, the manufacturers, whether you are a new or existing client. Reactions can include itchy, hot or burning scalp, blood poisoning or at its most extreme, anaphylactic shock.

Is It Essential?

Your health and well-being is our utmost priority. If we applied colour without performing an Allergy Test, it would compromise your safety. We’re not prepared to do that under any circumstance.

Some salons will still perform a colour service without a Skin Test, in fear that the inconvenience will force people elsewhere.

Reactions to hair dye are more common than you think, as explains Allergy UK’s Lindsey McManus,

“Every week our helpline advisors speak to concerned callers who have experienced an allergic reaction or irritation after using hair colouring. We always recommend Skin Patch testing before using hair dye products.”

What if You’ve Already Had a Colour Service?

If you have not had a colour service at our salon in the last six months you will need an Allergy Test.

Our bodies are changing all the time and manufacturers only need to slightly adjust the ingredients and it could cause a reaction. Equally you can use the same hair dye without it being changed and then for no reason, become sensitised and suddenly react.

How Does it Work?

Any new colour clients just need to pop into the salon within a maximum of 96 hours and a minimum of 48 hours before their appointment. A member of our team will complete the Allergy Test for you, it only takes 2 minutes so you don’t even need to book an appointment!

The test is simple, we mix equal quantities of colour and peroxide together and apply to a cleaned area of skin on the inside of the elbow or behind the ear.

This must then be left uncovered for 45 minutes, after which it can be removed using warm water only – shampoo, soap or wipes should not be used.

It can take a little while before a reaction occurs, hence the 48 hour period prior to service to assess sensitivity.

If you experience any reaction or discomfort you should contact your salon, otherwise continue with your colour service as usual.

How Do We Protect You?

All Francesco Group teams are highly trained to give you expert guidance when choosing your colour service. Most salons boast a Master Colour Expert, who have undergone 5 years of intensive training with Wella Professionals. They are amongst only 250 who hold the title in the UK.

We have also recently introduced a new colour range to the salon called Koleston Innosense, which has been specifically formulated to reduce the risk of developing an allergy.
